Singapore Foochow Association Chinese Orchestra Open House 2010

We are having our first Open House after our orchestra’s reformation. Our orchestra is honoured to have Lam Yan Sing as our advisor, Mr Wong Chee Kong as conductor/suona and percussion instructor. The main intention of the Open House is to clear the doubts of members in order to bring the orchestra to greater heights. and just in case you don't have, here's her email : liciax_x@hotmail.com

:D

Looking the CO pic on the PHSCO blog..i can see the happiness in u guys.
True, CO has been through many ups and downs. my dear juniors esp u guys went thru the near collapse of phsco…due to shortage of funds. But I can see that majority of u guys nv give up..and tried to fight for it. Haha. I still rmb someone ( name shall not be disclosed to hide identity) write a letter to our then principal (Mrs Tan) to request not to close down cca..and then it raised the attention of the cca teacher in charge. That is only one small thing I can rmb. As a senior, I feel sad that I can’t do much for u guys…sometimes, I do wish that maybe if i were born a few yrs later, den I could have been ur peers and went thru this difficult times with u guys.

But I guess it’s bcos of all these problems that u guys went through, that make u guys even stronger and able to cope with any small crops up. However, I believe that the previous exco and the present exco have done a lot for the CO too.

When I returned to CO, the discipline is so much better. At least u guys noe when to keep quiet , when to listen to the student conductor, when to behave…guess it’s bcos all of u can sense the urgency for this upcoming competition. I see the passion that u all have…taking initiative to know how to have the 台风, taking initiative to ask qns…and the never die spirit to try to improve your skills for the competition. Kudos to all of you!!!!!!

Speaking of tai feng, I’ll just said wat I observe. The best tai feng is done by the cello section and double bass. 2nd is the strings section. 3rd is tanbo( some parts got tai feng, the rest wooden block) and last is dizi section( only a few tai feng)…haha. Shall not elaborate more…
but dun be bothered too much now…if mon, u guys have the chance to improve jiu improve ba.

Do ur best for this upcoming competition. That is the most important thing. Though this competition means a lot to all of us, getting the award also may change some pp’s perceptions of our cca or wat…
those who are going for the competition for the 1st time, do not be scared and nervous. Treat this as a great learning experience that comes only once every 2 yrs. Note the ambience, atmosphere etc…den next time, u can share ur exp with new batch of juniors.
for graduating seniors of PHSCO, this is ur last chance doing everything for PHSCO le…dun worry, ur efforts will be truly recognized de. Since u guys have been thru this competition, went thru many ups and downs of PHSCO, went thru my fierce temper and diff seniors' bad temper etc…, continue to stay strong till the final lap of the competition.

I’m glad to see that all of u have a goal in mind on wat award u wan to achieve. But remember, in ur own life, it’s not measured by the amount and what type of awards u receive, thru participation in CO, u’ll learn a lot of things other than working hard to achieve that award. Wat will u have learnt??? I’ll leave this for u guys to reflect on.
For me, I’ve learnt that in Chinese Orchestra, it’s not about myself. We always have to close our eyes and listen to other sections. Being in co also taught me the importance of friendship that u’ll ever…can u imagine u have friends who share the same passion as u ..and working towards that goal???? You’re not alone at all. U’ll be even motivated to improve yourself….with friends encouraging you thru e way…..

At least, when I look back all these yrs, I nv regret making friends with justin, yvoone, Nicholas, lester , Janice etc ( pardon me for not writing everyone’s name down. But I can still recognize u guys de face and names de). They are the last batch that I last seen when I graduated from PHS. When I looked back all these yrs, it’s always the times I’ve shared u guys e most fun. Believe it anot, I still have justin chua’s little boy photo, and also jia ming and christopher’s short photos. Now, after so many yrs, seeing u guys shot up in height..is a miraculous thing. Haha.

I shall stop here.

I have instructions on what to do on that day in case I dun have a chance to tell everyone. Maybe u guys have already known or wat.
ON THE JOUNREY TO SINGAPORE CONFERENCE HALL,
I do hope all of you can quiet down and medidate throughout the journey. Wat are u supposed to do? Well. You’re supposed to imagine urself at the site of competition. each and everyone of you imagine what u’re supposed to do…including zhou tai etc. den also concentrate on recalling the performance pieces, which part are u supposed to move, listen, see conductor, play etc…

Rmb all this help cool ur nerves when u reach the hall..
I’ll reemphasis again on that day.

JIA YOU!!!!.HAVE CONFIDENCE IN UrSELF!!!!!
I believe those seniors who are not able to make it…be it in jc or in poly, in their deepest hearts, they are also wishing their juniors all the best for TUE. All of you are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love,
Ruiting ( VC of PHSCO 2006)

p/s: as a tanbo SL too, I would like to show more favourtism to tanbo. To my tanbo, although we do not really have a PROPER tanbo lao shi, e improvements in u guys de skills are truly remarkable. Ur senior loves all of you!!! :D

~Rui Ting~

but at the same time dont get too contented that your always "aim" for silver each syf~
get what i'm trying to put across to you people?
so... syf'11? o.O hahaaa!

(but for the time being after syf, you guys can slack a little first bah.
cause you people deserve this short break after working so hard for syf~ hahaa!)

however, once "serious" practices resumes, do continue to strive and practice hard!
jiayous!

ok, hello, anonymous here again. those who already know my identity, just don say out, coz i prefer to remain anonymous.
well, actually, things have been mentioned today have been mentioned by seniors many many times. but the thing is, just like Janice have said, HAVE U DONE ANYTHING TO IT?! u may know that 1+2 is not equal to 4, but u insist on writing the answer as 4, u still wont get the marks, u can tell teacher , oh teacher, i know that its equal to 3, but i just like to write 4, so i should get the marks. IT NONSENSE!!!similarly, u know that ur attitude needs to change, but u insist on not changing it, HOW IS CO GONNA CHANGE. CO IS YOURS! NOT JUSTIN'S NOT YVONNE'S NOT JANICE'S NOT LIHUI'S NOT DAOHAN'S NOT PRESBYTERIAN HIGH SCHOOL'S!!take pride in it please.
co is really gonna CLOSE DOWN FOR GOOD, if we don attain a silver. seniors who had graduated still care abt this CO, maybe they know CO's practice schedule BETTER THAN SOME OF U!if CO close down, all of us will be guilty, will be shameful of ourself as CO closed down because this batch of ppl did not work hard enough!!!!
its a PRIVILAGE to participate in SYF.my fren practiced like MAD!she came everyday and can play the part she's supposed to play well!but in the end, SHE CANNOT GO FOR SYF!!i'm not trying to gain some sympathy for her, but its just to let u ppl who CANNOT EVEN DO UR BEST BY COMING AND PLAYING WITH UR HEART know that u guys are privilaged, SERIOUSLY PRIVILAGED!!so u gotta treasure it..
seriously, BUCK UP!last few days only..practice like mad WITH UR HEART~!
if the tears of seniors cannot move and touch u, i wonder wat will...you are human beings, not rocks, u have feelings, u have the MIND TO THINK WAT IS RIGHT!!
like what pikhuei said, dont let this be your last SYF..
jiayous..people had said what we can, its up to u whether u wanna do it or not..
assemble in CO room tml at 6.45am.DON BE LATE IF U HAVE THE HEART, THE SOUL AND THE BLOOD.(coz u're a human if u have all 3)

hey pple,
it's juz 5days fm our syf.
i noe tt every1 is stressed.
espacially sec 4s and those who nid to lead.
but dun let our surrounding overcome us but overcome our surrounding
instead of giving up or trying to run away fm stress,
y not we make use of it to improve ourself?
for eg,
we noe tt many pple view us as eg/ role model(shows tt we're impt, respected and of cos needed), we shld try our best rite?
no matter wat e result is, as long as we put in effort, we're all winners.
DUN LOOK DOWN ON OURSELVES! WE CAN DO IT DE.
i'm certain tt yr dun 1 co to close down rite(co will close down if we dun get at least a silver )?
no matter how much yr hate tis co, it WILL affect yr testimonial
if co is disbanded, nth will happen to e sec 4s but to e rest of e lvl.
it'll b reflected as disbanded.
so when u go for yr higher education,
and they question abt tis,
yr'll leave a bad impression.
so let's try to treasure e remaining time.
put in effort and we shall enjoy e fruits of our labour.
i noe i very naggy, sry.

How to make full use of the remaining days...
Thursday, April 9, 2009

1) Take care of your body.

2) Cancel/Ignore all other activities (School activities, inform Ms Wong beforehand)

3) Expose yourself to more CO music and get the feelings
(Ours is those smoothing but sometimes got the ongoing/forward-looking force. Both songs)

4) Go to my blog "http://hi-donaven.blogspot.com/"

Listen to
Ju Hua Tai (smoothing)
Jiang Jun Ling (smoothing & ongoing/forward-looking force)
Feng Nian Ji (smoothing & ongoing/forward-looking force)
Mo Li Hua by Nanyang Girls (Identify their flaws and strengths, reflect & recommend improvements)
Chun (The front part similar to chun yue fen fen)

5) Identify which part of the CHAN GE and CHUN YU FEN FEN is smoothing and forward-looking force relate them to pictures or scenes.

EG,
CHAN GE front part is walking into a forest with mist (cello)and birds(chimes, vibraphone, yang qin). Cicada start screeching (sheng). Morning sun, birds coming out (Tan Bo Yue), slight wind(hu qin, dizi).
(Smoothing)

Afternoon came Cicada become active (Bar 57 onwards). Cicada full of hope, roaming around forest (melody). Cicada sreeching (Dizi "pi pi pi pi"). Last three notes is cicada calling.
(Forward-looking)

CHUN YU FEN FEN front part slight wind(hu qin and cello base), water droplets (dizi). Flowers start opening, sun coming out (Hu qin melody + Whole orchestra come in)
(Smoothing to strong)

Dizzle (Tan bo yue). gust of wind, light raining (hu qin melody), wind (dizi trail), rain getting smaller(dizi & gao hu solo). Water droplets and gradually people coming out (Bar 77 to 98).
(Smoothing)

Vibrant place full of children and adults (Bar 140 to 155),
(Forward-looking)

Beautiful mountains and scenery (Cello, whole orchestra).
(Smoothing)

Human activities begins and slowly reduce(Bar198 to 216).
(Forward-looking to gentle)

Dizzle (Tan Bo Yue), Wind (Xiao), Water droplets (dizi and pipa solo), wind getting weaker (vibraphone and glockenspiel), rain started to stop gradually(hu qin and whole orchestra).
(Smoothing)

*This is how I feel about the two songs although it may not be correct but should be able to help you all get the feelings. I hope that the feelings and Xpressions emphasized by our conductors and instructors can be make possible by our CO members.

Everytime the music came out from you must melt your heart.

taken off from a website, contents with regards to a viewer's comment upon watching the Chun Yu Fen Fen msia competiting groups.

By the way, just some info about the composer for chun yu.
he wrote many songs, one of which includes the set of

from china wiki:

So, i suggest you guys stop complaining! Feel honoured to be playing a famous composer's work ;)

Look, SYF for us is on 21st April.

How many days are we genuinely left with?
MINUSING THE TIME THAT WE GIVE YOU SO MUCH BREAKS?
SO MUCH FREEDOM? THAT YOU GUYS ABUSE IT?
Everyone's stressed, tired, whatever.
TELL ME WHO'S NOT?
YOU SELFISH PEOPLE.

To those who only cares about themselves, think again. We are an ORCHESTRA. And how are we portraying ourselves now? Individuals?

So what if you're good in the solo pieces, been in some prestigious primary school CO and even got good awards, grades. Does it prove of any standards when practicing as an ORCHESTRA?

Please, reflect on your actions.
As mentioned in the previous post by daohan, if YOU have understood our faults LONG AGO, I wouldn't be telling you people to stay back, and waste my saliva that i would rather talk to my baby nephew, would I?

Okay, so here's the few major problems.

Your Attitude, No matter whether you're on stage or not.
I really do not wish to see people slouching. It'll become a habit and will all be revealed on stage.
And please move to the music. Well I'm not forcing you to MUST move, but of course don't sit there like some piece of wood! PLUS, i do not want to hear an overproduction of noise. You guys are old enough to control yourself, play and do whatever thing at the APPROPRIATE TIME.

Next, I dont want to see people walking in and out of CO room like as if its YOUR HOME.
Whether the pin-pointed ones are reading this or not, I DO NOT wish to see people walking freely in and out of the room. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE MUSIC IS ALREADY ONGOING.
Do you know its really rude, to barge in and out like NOBODY'S BUSINESS?!

So make a point to go to the washroom before practice, or during given breaks.
Its becoming so often that its starting to make the teachers feel irritated already.

Lastly, your attendance.
Im really sick and tired of hearing people fighting for the attendance that they do NOT initially deserve. Want your attendance? Make a point to even COME.
Im not supposed to give you even a half attendance when you came in at 5? when practice ends at 6!
And sometimes, people come at 3, and can even leave abruptly at 4?!
Where's your respect for your teachers, seniors?
Don't you feel that you need to make a point to inform us of your whereabouts?!

What do you take us for? YOUR LEADERS OR YOUR ORNAMENTS.

I've spoken this for numerous times.
Reprimanded almost everyone for umpteen times.

What's the result? Nothing.
If you're talking about consistency, give it to me or your future leaders only AFTER you've attained a presentable result.

I can't be your hands to force you to practice, it's really up to you whether you want to make your own effort already.
We're just gonna leave right after SYF ends.

Don't have any regrets upon hearing the results.

With due respect and no harsh offenses to anyone, except for the guilty ones,
justin.

Rehearsal at SCH
Monday, March 9, 2009

From the only practice we had at SCH for this year's Central Judging, these are some comments by our seniors...

Yu Ting
-Standard not very good
-Need to brush up skills
-Memorize the piece
-Feel the music
-All look like statues
-Learn to listen to others
-Don't concentrate too much on yourself
-Not different people playing different notes (Must sound together as a whole)
-Sounds bad

Alicia Pan
-Need more practice
-Guan Yue put in more hard work
-Mistakes obvious in choice piece

Loretta
-Songs are okay except some parts.

These comments are not to demoralize you but to encourage you to do something to all the weaknesses pointed out for you.

If you had realized these mistakes or short comings long ago, then you should become better by now.

Today's practice is quite perfect but there are still some parts not up to the standard. Although Guan Yue may not be doing well enough but we tried our best to squeeze out time for practices thus, please bear with us. We will practice hard and make sure that your contribution(s) to CO won't go wasted.

- LISTEN!!dont make seniors shout..they are busy and stressed with o lvl, so try make life easier for them and cooperate
- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE COME FRO PRACTICES!!DONT ANYHOW PON... ( tired is not an excuse, a lot of hw isnt a excuse too)

I've said this during CO practice, but i seriously hope everyone will take note of this.
Though I may looked as if I don't care, I'm freaking serious about this okay.

CO belongs to everyone, the committee has these extra practices for a purpose, achieve some good standard results in SYF next year. And plus, to achieve these good results, everyone has to make an effort to contribute to the CO if you want to see something out of this. I know it has been hard for everyone to make extra time to come for the practices, but then again, who doesn't? We're taking this walk towards our goal together.

To reinforce the whole thing, when anyone of you is unable to turn up for practice, please make a small effort to notify your Sectional Leader or either me or Yvonne. It's very hard to give an explanation to the teachers, plus it's always the attendance that disappoints them every time, which is super disheartening.

You know what Zhou told me?
"如这样的出席率,你们没希望."

Do you know how i felt when i received the sms? It was totally like.. shit.
Like, i mean, no one would want to further disappoint any person that's already disappointed enough by us already, right?

So make an effort. Come for practices.
It's only a month to our rehearsal, and that only rehearsal would be crucial because firstly, we wouldn't know how we exactly sound like in the SCH hall, and how we should assemble walking into the hall.
